“My piece is about the rights of animals and how some are forced to go through cruel animal testing. It relates to article 5 of Human Rights, freedom from torture and degrading treatment. Animal testing is a huge problem when it comes to lab rats and rabbits. I wanted to educate the people about the inhumane nature of animal testing, how it can be a living nightmare, and how most lab rats and rabbits are massively overbred and kept in confinement their whole lives to be tested on.”
ARTIST BIO: Ashleigh Ferguson is a Grade 12 student at Butler Tech School of Art (SOA).
PROJECT: After learning about human rights in Mrs. Valerie Folz’ Government classes at Butler Tech School of the Arts, 45 high school students chose a human rights issue they wanted to research. Then in Mrs. Mary Catherine Ruby’s Visual Art + Design classes they visually communicated their voice through their art using symbolic imagery to represent the human rights issue they had selected.
