“Imagine escaping slavery through Kentucky into Ohio prior to and during the Civil War. Over 2000 slaves found their way through the Underground Railroad “station” of the Rankin House with the lighted candle in a window as a beacon to freedom from slavery by crossing the Ohio River from Mason County, Kentucky to Ripley, Ohio.”
ARTIST BIO: Michael Skaggs’s award-winning photography has been published in The State of America, Black & White Magazine, B&W+Color Magazine, Licking River Review, True NKU and RoHoPress.com. Michael received his M.A. in Speech Communication from Montclair State University and his B.A. in Media Arts and Sociology (double major) from Jersey City State College. He has taught Public Speaking, Media in a Diverse Society, Introduction to Communication Studies, and Photojournalism at Northern Kentucky University since 2000. Michael retired at the conclusion of the Spring 2023 semester and currently teaches as an adjunct instructor at NKU.
