Extend a Kind Hand: “This screenprint was created through listening to life lessons from Tala’s experiences. Several symbols of her identity and background are woven throughout including the colors of the Palestinian flag, poppies, jasmine, and more. These show an essential need to recognize people in their authenticity and stand in solidarity with compassion to fight against oppressive systems.”

The Continual Learner: “This triptych represents our shared community standing in solidarity to combat misinformation and isolation. This silhouette is of Ian’s grandma’s rocking chair. The cardinal, lavender flowers, violin, ventilator machine, and Black-eyed Susans represent resistance, love, endurance, and community. A book descends in his quest for continual growth.”

Accessibility Is Flexibility: “Through small shifts, we can create larger accessibility for wider audiences. This blueprint maps out the ideal situation for communication with Professor Weaver. She is able to shift and change as a chameleon to meet people where they are whether through sign language, speech, the written word, or in between on the communication continuum.”
ARTIST BIO: Ian McIlvain creates art to spark conversation, cultivate awareness, and further social change. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Xavier University with concentrations in Painting and Printmaking. His work explores how art can challenge misinformation and isolation, and serves as a platform for advocacy and connection. Often using surrealist symbolism and silhouettes, Ian invites viewers into dialogue and encourages reflection on shared experiences, diverse perspectives, and the stories that shape us.
