“I wanted to compare the religious icons of Santa Muerte and La Virgen de Guadalupe and share that they are the same figure head. Santa Muerte is a figure that stands for peace in life and in death. Guadalupe stands for the same ideals. The connection of modern Catholics and previous Pagan beliefs in Mexico shows that these ideas have always been important to the culture.”
ARTIST BIO: Abriljoanna Huerta is a Mexican American artist who is a graduate of the Art Academy of Cincinnati and creates artwork that reflects her experience as a queer Latina living in the modern world. The primary genres she works with are horror and sci-fi with both being a tool to showcase the horrific potentials of what can happen. She works as a multidisciplinary artist and always is finding new ways to express her work.
