“Northern State Hospital was an asylum for patients deemed insane by the courts. It is one of the locations in Washington state where patients with mental illness were forcibly sterilized under the state’s eugenics laws. The eugenic sterilization laws were in effect from 1909 until 1942 when the laws were overturned by the state supreme court, not by the state legislature.”
ARTIST BIO: Eric Dean is a self taught, woodblock print maker, who uses traditional Japanese materials and techniques (mokuhanga). He is based in the South Puget Sound region of Washington State, United States.
