“Through depictions of animals, places and people, I draw attention to earth and human rights. The woodcut ‘Pika imperiled’ depicts the small American mammal on a field of melting snow—climate change has already extirpated this creature from one-third of its alpine habitats in the USA. ‘Homage to Durer: American Apocalypse’ is based on 2 woodcuts by Albrecht Durer: the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse  and The Cross of Christ with Saint Veronica. In my image, Veronica is replaced by the image of Rumeysa Ozturk (a Tufts PhD student who was arrested by ICE agents) holding a cloth inscribed with the words ‘Human Rights’ while the fallen Christ obstructs the men on horses. The four horsemen are from front to back: Death (Trump), Famine (Musk), War (Vance), and Pestilence/Plague (RFK Jr.). ‘Envy’ depicts the futility of men who resent others’ qualities which often leads them to destructive actions.”
ARTIST BIO: Suzanne Michele Chouteau is Professor Emerita of Art at Xavier University and an enrolled citizen of the Shawnee Tribe (Oklahoma) who lives on ancestral lands in south-central Ohio.
