“My art piece relates to Article 19 of the Human Rights, freedom of speech and its subject, Student Censorship, which involves student journalists ending up having their free speech suppressed, them not being allowed to do much. It can interfere with the publishing of a school newspaper for example. The meaning behind my art piece was to show a student removing something that was covering their part in the newspaper, hence they were no longer censored.”
ARTIST BIO: Morgan Koehler is a Grade 11 student at Butler Tech School of Art (SOA).
PROJECT: After learning about human rights in Mrs. Valerie Folz’ Government classes at Butler Tech School of the Arts, 45 high school students chose a human rights issue they wanted to research. Then in Mrs. Mary Catherine Ruby’s Visual Art + Design classes they visually communicated their voice through their art using symbolic imagery to represent the human rights issue they had selected.
