“My art piece focuses on sexual assault awareness, the effect on victims, and how no one is alone in their fight. It relates to article 5 of Human Rights, freedom from torture and degrading treatment, and shows red and teal hands reaching out around a silver hand supporting a monochromatic woman. The assaulters’ hands are red to symbolize an angry and pernicious attitude towards the woman. The color teal for the helping hands is the color of the sexual assault awareness ribbon. Sadly, the first national assault awareness month campaign wasn’t until 2001.”
ARTIST BIO: Macy Mowery is a Grade 12 student at Butler Tech School of Art (SOA).
PROJECT: After learning about human rights in Mrs. Valerie Folz’ Government classes at Butler Tech School of the Arts, 45 high school students chose a human rights issue they wanted to research. Then in Mrs. Mary Catherine Ruby’s Visual Art + Design classes they visually communicated their voice through their art using symbolic imagery to represent the human rights issue they had selected.
