“Herodotus contemplates how history is not only written by the victors but also observed by the forgotten. The seated figure in the foreground occupies both a physical and psychological distance from the passing crowd, embodying a quiet resistance to the motion and indifference of the world around him. The work draws from the spirit of the ancient historian Herodotus, the “Father of History,” reimagined here not as a recorder of empires, but as an unseen observer of human frailty and endurance. The loose, gestural brushwork contrasts the solidity of the fallen figure with the abstraction of those who move past—blurring the line between presence and disappearance. Through this tension, the painting asks: who is remembered, and who is merely seen? In the chaos of modern life, Herodotus becomes a meditation on empathy, time, and the silent testimony of those who endure without voice.”
ARTIST BIO: Jim Conroy is a self taught artist, a Cincinnati Native and a retired firefighter/paramedic. He is currently a member and former board member of the Cincinnati Art Club. Through his art, Jim works to create a language of shared experience & understanding. He works mostly in oil paints and his style is realistic mixed with impressionist abstraction. Painting allows Jim to process and express his thoughts and feelings through what he creates.
