“The neighborhood is a familiar place for students. It is an image of a safe haven and represents the shelter we all seek to have. Guided by art teacher Katherine Smith, 5th and 6th grade students at Frederick Douglass Elementary were asked to focus on their own homes. They considered what makes a building function as a home and what makes a home aesthetically motivating. They analyzed the architecture and the history of their neighborhoods and looking at their assets, they created a small relief sculpture of their home out of cardboard, tape, and glue. “
