“This piece highlights Nelson Mandela, who is an inspirational activist against racial discrimination in South Africa. Mandela worked with other members of the African National Congress (ANC) to combat South Africa’s apartheid government, and was arrested along with several members of the ANC for sabotage. Mandela used the trial as a platform to talk about South Africa’s unjust apartheid system. He was sentenced to life in prison but the trial caught the attention of other countries and the injustice of South Africa’s government. Mandela became a symbol for anti apartheid and was later released from prison. After his release he worked hard to end the apartheid system in South Africa and became South Africa’s first democratically elected black president. Even after his presidency his work and legacy remain an inspiration for racial equality for all.”
