“Maya Angelou was an American memoirist, poet, and civil rights activist who began her career in political activism in 1960, working together with other leaders of the civil rights movement including Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Through her works, Maya Angelou promotes pride in one’s identity, honors those who fought and died for freedom, and expresses resistance to oppression through exposing the socially unjust conditions that African Americans face. Over the course of her career, Angelou published over 30 titles and received over 50 honorary degrees, including the highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Even after her passing, her words stand strong in the minds of young men and women. Her poems and life story are viewed as lessons and common motivations for those who desire to enact change. “
