“My work shares an insight where beauty wins it all without a need to try. Effortlessly good will always prevail, no matter the circumstances.”
ARTIST BIO: Sammy Mutinda, born 1990, is a self-taught contemporary visual artist from the Mukuru slums on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. Growing up in this marginalized community shaped his artistic vision and heightened his awareness of social and environmental issues. A multidisciplinary artist and printmaker, his abstract works investigate human behavior in relation to the environment, informed by spiritual, social, and political forces. His practice explores the tension between connection and disconnection from reality, revealing coping mechanisms that lead to either self-destruction or healing for humanity and all living beings.
Sammy is a senior artist with the Wajukuu Art Project and has exhibited both locally and internationally. In 2024–2025, he was a Sasa Nairobi Artist Fellow at the Goethe-Institut. His recent exhibitions include PRINT|PRINTS (HOF, Kibera Art District, 2025), Ecology X Posters for the Future (Kairos Futura, 2025), and Before Our Homes Go Down (Wajukuu Arts, 2024). His work was also featured in Documenta15 (Kassel, Germany, 2022) and Munyu Space, 2024.
