“I have recently transformed my practice to use sustainable materials like botanical dyes. Paint itself started conflicting with my values. This is a hybrid piece where I have dyed the background using indigo and used my oil paints to paint the intense internal conflict I was experiencing. I love the color you can achieve with oils, but at what cost?”
ARTIST BIO: Devan Horton is a Northern Kentucky artist who creates paintings that call attention to the ways in which humans have corrupted nature. Since receiving her BFA in Painting from Northern Kentucky University, activism, collectiveness, and a love of the natural world have remained themes in Devan’s work since college. Recently, she has launched a series of experiments with sustainable, non-toxic paints, pigments, and regenerative canvas materials.
