“Libraries and librarians are under attack. Books are challenged and outlawed. In 1933, under the WPA, a small group of librarians collected books, rode on horseback to distribute written words to mountain communities in Appalachia. Freedom to read was their call – as it was then so it is now – the freedom to read books – any book is a precious freedom.”
ARTIST BIO: Paper, images, words, fiber and objects are central to Carol Freid’s installation, conceptual and non-traditional book art. While weaving in themes of reformed memory, change, complexity of time and place, her work is an exploration into what is hidden and revealed, the tension between lost and found, fading texts in and out of images, objects that are repurposed by relationship and placement simultaneously evoking mystery and insight. Carol seeks to challenge the viewer, create a complex set of expectations by transforming space, image and thought.
