“We came to escape tyranny, threats of death, to be free. We came for a better life to fulfill our potential. We were not always welcomed but we stayed, made a life, made contributions. Today the hopes and dreams of tens of thousands will be crushed. Today we cease to be the country of hope, instead we are the country who sends immigrants away.”
ARTIST BIO: Paper, images, words, fiber and objects are central to Carol Freid’s installation, conceptual and non-traditional book art. While weaving in themes of reformed memory, change, complexity of time and place, her work is an exploration into what is hidden and revealed, the tension between lost and found, fading texts in and out of images, objects that are repurposed by relationship and placement simultaneously evoking mystery and insight. Carol seeks to challenge the viewer, create a complex set of expectations by transforming space, image and thought.
