“Thousands of slaves escaped to freedom through the secret network of the Underground Railroad. Many made it by crossing the Ohio River, the boundary between slave-holding Kentucky and free Ohio. Crossings took place between Augusta and Maysville, KY, particularly to Ripley, OH, and the home of Presbyterian abolitionist John Rankin. His home was high up on a hill overlooking the river and was a beacon of hope and freedom.”
